Heartbeat of Home: DEƐ MEFIRI (Sunyani)
More Than an Exhibition
Heartbeat of Home: DEƐ MEFIRI (Sunyani) is a photography exhibition that explores the movement, memory, architecture, culture, and everyday life of Sunyani. At its heart, the project is a visual celebration of the city and a commitment to preserving its stories for future generations.
For many people, Sunyani is simply a place they pass through, live in, or hear about. For me, it is home. It is a city constantly evolving, shaped by its people, businesses, roads, buildings, traditions, and everyday moments. This exhibition seeks to document that evolution while celebrating the beauty that already exists within it.
The Story Behind the Work
The exhibition is built around a simple idea: the places we see every day are part of our history.
The artworks document familiar landmarks, changing architecture, public spaces, street life, weather, movement, and the people who give Sunyani its character. Together, they create a visual archive of a city in transition.
As years pass, buildings will change, roads will expand, businesses will relocate, and communities will evolve. These photographs preserve moments that may one day only exist in memory. They serve not only as artworks, but also as records of a specific time in the story of Sunyani.
The Creative Process
One of the most unique aspects of this project is that the entire body of work was created using everyday tools.
The photographs were captured using an iPhone, a Google Pixel smartphone, and a DJI Mini 3 Pro drone.
Rather than relying on expensive equipment, the project demonstrates that creativity is not limited by the tools available. What matters most is vision, consistency, and the ability to see stories where others might overlook them.
The exhibition also incorporates augmented reality technology through Artivive. Visitors can scan selected artworks and watch them come alive through embedded video experiences, transforming still photographs into moving visual stories.
What Makes These Photographs Art?
These images are more than simple documentation.
Each photograph has been intentionally composed, crafted, and refined to create a timeless visual experience. Through light, perspective, movement, atmosphere, and storytelling, ordinary scenes are transformed into works that invite reflection and emotional connection.
The goal was not simply to record what was seen, but to create images that could continue speaking to viewers years from now.
What Inspired the Project?
The inspiration came from two realizations.
The first was recognizing how quickly Sunyani is changing. Every year, new buildings emerge, familiar spaces disappear, and the city continues to grow. I wanted to create a visual archive before these moments were lost.
The second was realizing that very little of this kind of long-term visual documentation exists for Sunyani. Through my travels, I have experienced exhibitions, galleries, museums, and creative projects that celebrate the identities of their communities. I began asking myself a simple question:
"If other places are preserving their stories, why not Sunyani?"
That question became the foundation of Heartbeat of Home.
The Message
Above all, I want people to leave this exhibition with a renewed appreciation for Sunyani.
I want them to see that Sunyani is not the village many people imagine it to be. It is a growing city filled with beauty, stories, ambition, culture, and possibility.
I also hope the exhibition inspires young creatives. Many young people believe success can only come through traditional career paths. This project stands as proof that creativity has value. Art, photography, storytelling, and innovation can create opportunities, impact communities, and support families.
If even one young person leaves believing their creativity matters, then this exhibition will have achieved something far greater than displaying photographs on a wall.
Because Heartbeat of Home is ultimately about more than images.
It is about preserving memory, celebrating identity, and reminding us that home is a story worth telling.
